PROFIL MONTASE PRODUCTIONS

After several years of writing film reviews, senior members of Montase began experimenting with producing short films using modest equipment at their own basecamp. From these early productions, it became evident that their extensive film knowledge and references strongly influenced the quality of their works. Despite having simple stories and concepts, their films stood out for their distinctive and creative presentation. This stylistic approach would later become the hallmark of Montase’s film productions.
A turning point came when one of Montase’s films, Umbul (The Spring), won four awards at the Yogyakarta Independent Film Festival 2013 and received a Best Film nomination at Piala Maya 2013. From that moment, the Montase Film Community, under the name Montase Productions, began actively producing short films—both fiction and documentary—that achieved remarkable success and critical acclaim at various prestigious film festivals in Indonesia and abroad. Several of Montase Productions’ short films have even been screened in cinemas in DCP format.
As passionate film lovers and critics, the members of the Montase Film Community bring a distinctive sensibility to their work, giving Montase films a unique and recognizable style. Their emphasis lies in strong visual storytelling and cinematic composition. With very limited production budgets—typically ranging from Rp 500,000 to Rp 3,000,000 (for productions between 2013 and 2015)—most of their films were independently produced using simple, available equipment.
Montase’s fiction and documentary films often explore themes of local wisdom through simple yet meaningful narratives. Moving forward, Montase Productions aims to continue producing high-quality films capable of competing on the global stage and bringing pride to Indonesian cinema.
